“Men of Vision and Iron Fisted Control: U of I Deans of Men Thomas Arkle Clark and Fred Turner, 1901-1967,” a lecture by Prof. Robert Schwartz, Department Chair of Educational Leadership and Policies Studies at Florida State University is our first event of the year. Location/time: Main Library, Room 146 (University Archives), September 13, 7:00-8:30pm.

Prof. Schwartz is author of Deans of Men and the Shaping of Modern College Culture (2010) which profiles the rise of deans of men within US universities during the twentieth century. Of particular interested to UIUC, Schwartz explores the careers of UIUC’s powerful Dean of Mens, Thomas A. Clark, considered to be the first “Dean of Men” and his protégé and successor, Dean Fred Turner. The long and far-reaching career of these men is the subject of his

 

 

 

 “The Ethnography of the University Initiative” a conversation with Dr. Karen Rodriguez'G from the University of Illinois is our inaugural reading group event. Location/time: Lincoln Hall, Room 1024, September 28, 3:00-5:00pm.

Dr. Karen Rodriguez'G is Interim Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research, Program Director for EUI, and historian of the British Empire. Dr. Rodriguez'G will lead a conversation about the aims and resources of the Ethnography of the University Initiative and the possibilities of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research focused on the many facets of the University of Illinois.
